WHAT: Nickel City Opera presents The Falling and the Rising, by Zach Redler and Jerre Dye.

NCO's Artistic Director, Valerian Ruminski, son of Sgt. Valerian S. Ruminski, is proud to present this special co-production with the US Army. A unique and poignant experience which shines a light on the sacrifices that are made by every person who joins the military. Sung by active military personnel.

Includes a full theatrical set, costumes, a 12 piece orchestra, lighting and a full chorus.

THE FALLING AND THE RISING, a new American opera, is based upon a series of interviews with wounded warriors, active duty Soldiers, and Veterans, and seeks to share the camaraderie and values of Soldiers serving in America’s Army. It tells the story of a Soldier, posted in a conflict overseas, whose world is forever changed by an improvised explosive device shortly after a video chat with her daughter.

The military doctors induce a coma to save her life. We follow as she makes her way through a miraculous coma - induced dreamscape - one punctuated with the lives of other fellow service members, each on their own individual journey toward healing and home. Together, they must move toward clarity, comfort, consciousness, and communal hope during a time of adversity.

This operatic soldier’s odyssey was created in hopes of capturing the indomitable spirit of our U.S. military veterans and to shed light on the inspirational power of their often overlooked stories. THE FALLING AND THE RISING is a story of family, service, and sacrifice inside a period of great uncertainty.

All cast are members of the US Military. As the son of a US Army Veteran, NCO's Artistic Director, Valerian Ruminski will be joining THE FALLING AND THE RISING chorus.

THE FALLING AND THE RISING was conceived by Sergeant First Class Benjamin Hilgert
THE FALLING AND THE RISING was originally commissioned by the US Army Field Band and
Soldiers Chorus, Opera Memphis, Seattle Opera, San Diego Opera, Arizona Opera, and TCU.
THE FALLING AND THE RISING was originally workshopped at Seagle Music Colony.
Special thanks go to Garnett Brooks for producing the North Carolina premiere at the Alvin Ailey
Citigroup Theater in January, 2018.
