WHAT: Sotto Voce Presents Cavalleria Rusticana Heralded as "the area's most innovative new opera organization" (Buffalo Spree, Best of WNY 2025), Sotto Voce, Buffalo's newest opera company, will stage Pietro Mascagni’s one‑act verismo classic Cavalleria Rusticana (Rustic Chivalry). This timeless tale of passion, betrayal, and heartbreak will be brought to life by Sotto Voce’s signature expressive singing and innovative staging – including a set evoking a Sicilian village on Easter morning. The production will feature both local and national talent and showcase the power of bel canto vocal technique.

Audiences will also experience two original short films accompanying the Overture and Intermezzo, which will enrich the audience’s understanding of the characters’ emotions and deepen the emotional resonance of Mascagni’s score. This production marks Sotto Voce’s second collaboration with members of the Avanti orchestra, conducted by Mason Cancilla.

Eastman Opera Theatre Presents: Die Fledermaus

Closing the season in the gorgeous Kodak Hall at Eastman Theatre, EOT’s lively take on Die Fledermaus brings the charm, wit, and champagne-fueled shenanigans of this timeless operetta into the spotlight.

“This Die Fledermaus spins beneath the glitter ball of Studio 54, where Strauss meets sequins, and mistaken identity dances to a disco beat,” exclaims director Octavio Cardenas. “In a world of excess, glamour, and liberation, the masks are bolder, the lies shinier, and the hangover just as delicious.” From mistaken identities and elaborate disguises to revenge schemes and late-night revelry, this joyful tale of Vienna’s elite is not to be missed.

Music by Johann Strauss II; Libretto by Karl Haffner and Richard Genée

Directed by Octavio Cardenas; Conducted by Timothy Long

Sung in German with English dialogue and full orchestra

WHEN: Saturday, May 30, 2026, 7:30 PM; Sunday, May 31, 2026, 2:30 PM

WHAT: The Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra presents Carmina Burana. Featuring JoAnn Falletta, conductor; Eva Rae Martinez, soprano; Kameron Lopreore, tenor; Joshua Conyers, baritone; Buffalo Philharmonic Chorus.

As the first of a trilogy of cantatas, Orff’s irreverent Carmina Burana draws from a 13th century compilation of medieval vagabond songs and poems detailing fate’s fickleness, pagan delights, and corruption. The primitivistic piece enraptures audiences with its hypnotic sensuality, preoccupation with a chant-like and ritualistic style, and powerful rhythms. Fantastic solo voices joined by the Buffalo Philharmonic Chorus sing of the full range of human love, from pining to ecstatic and more. Hindemith’s reworked Symphonic Dances complete the program, which emerged from discarded ballet collaborations. Challenging counterpoint as well as soft, dignified passages constitute this Neo-Classical piece written in a tumultuous era of history.
